Straight Hair Is Too Much Work!

Straight Hair is too Much Work! When I first brought this topic into the blog, I said Curly Hair is Too Much Work!

Some people felt identified, and others requested me to expand the subject. Now I’m bringing a second part to that article.

For those of you who read “Curly Hair is Too Much Work!”, you might remember me saying that:

  1. I was tired of that phrase.
  2. How curly hair is the same as straight hair when it comes to workload.

However, today I will explain why a person with curly hair won’t have it easy when it comes to straight hair either, and why this is all related to mindset.

straight hair is too much work

Background story

When I first started in the curly hair journey, one of the reasons why people wouldn’t want to wear their naturally curly hair, was because they said that a lot.

Curly hair is too difficult to keep!

Yet, that wasn’t far from the truth. If you are not used to treating curly hair or if you haven’t accepted your curly hair, you will find yourself saying this a lot. And I believe this is all related to our mindset.

I say this is because when we are straightening our hair with the only goal of fitting into society’s expectation, in our mind, we do not feel the burden. This is because even if we do not get the ideal results, we are feeling part of society’s beauty standards.

We are feeling accepted!

In our mind, it is not a lot of work (to straighten our hair) because we are used to that; because we are fitting in. But when a person who is already embracing their natural hair, thinks about the process she had to go through, she will realize that straight hair is also a lot of work.

*I would like to point out that this is only talking from a curly hair perspective and my experience. So, this might not apply to everyone.

Why STRAIGHT Hair is Too Much Work?

The Process

When a person with curly hair wants to straighten their hair, that person has to go through a process. For some people, the process is long, and for others, it is short, but regardless of that, it is still a process.

The straightening process includes hair relaxing products along with a variety of other hair products. It also includes flat ironing or blow-drying, and lots of patience and dedication. Still, I’m not mentioning the large amount of money that you have to put into this.

This process itself will only provide you with temporary straight hair. But, if you want to have permanent straight hair, you will have to repeat this process over and over again for the next years of your life until you obtain the desired results.

The Mindset

Another factor that makes straight hair workload being a burden, however, it doesn’t feel like it, is the mindset. When a person wants to fit into society’s expectations, they will have to work hard to meet them.

Society is always changing and demanding!

And because of this, the pleaser will always have a hard time adapting to these changes.

*The pleaser is the type of person who is regularly trying to meet society’s standards.

However, when a person is in this toxic mindset, they will not realize or acknowledge this. The reason is that that person will think that it is OK because other people do it and they feel accepted. And feeling accepted is part of what humans are continually looking for.

What Will Change The Mindset?

The only thing that can change this type of mindset is that the person accepts their hair type.

It will not be until this person accepts the fact that they have curly or kinky hair, and that their hair type is beautiful, that they will be able to break from this. This person has to love themself for who they are and not for what people or society wants them to be.

The Problem

Most of us have grown in this toxic culture that calls curly and kinky hair ugly, and straight and wavy hair beautiful. Yet, we have not changed our language, and we are not correcting people around us either.

This toxic way of thinking and speaking is being embedded into people’s minds (especially our children), and they grow with this mentality. They think that curly and kinky hair is a type of ugly (Bad) hair, and since they want to be accepted into society, they want what people call, the ideal (Good) hair.

The Solution

We should change the way we talk and the way we think.

Although I would like to say that we should stop thinking about what people think of us, and think more about what we think of ourselves, that is not possible or realistic. At least for the younger ones (even if I tell them to work on what they think of themselves), they will still want to be accepted in their social circle, and they will try their best to do so. If we as adults tell them that a particular hair type is Bad, they will try to avoid it because they will want to look Good.

Conclusion

For me, it is a fact that straight hair is just as tough to maintain as curly hair. We should always try to get the best out of our hair and learn to love and care for it.

This article goes from addressing the problem of people saying curly hair is difficult to keep, to acknowledging that our mindset can make things look more complicated. Also, that our way of speaking, can distort the way we think of something, and we might think that it is physically impossible for us to achieve.

All hair types are GOOD hair as long as they are healthy. Damaged hair is the real BAD hair.
