Shea Moisture JBCO Leave-In (Product Breakdown)

Product Name: Shea Moisture: Jamaican Black Castor Oil – Strengthen & Restore – Leave-In Conditioner (aka Shea Moisture JBCO Leave-In)

Introduction

Shea Moisture has been a well-known brand in the CGM (Curly Girl Method) community for a long time. Their products have been extremely recommended, especially to coarse hair and tighter curls, as they tend to have heavy butter and oils.

Today, we’ll take a detailed look at one of their products, the Shea Moisture JBCO Leave-In, and I’ll bring my experience with this product. I will also take on an in-deep look at their ingredients and what I recommend based on them.

*The ingredients are described and further discussed in the Ingredients Review section.

This product is rich in Proteins, Moisturizers, and Hydrators. Having all these proteins and hydration means that sensitive hairs can easily have a protein or moisture overload. Also, due to all the moisturizers, your hair can easily get weighed down.

Because this product is rich in Proteins, Moisturizers, and Hydrators, this product is excellent to restore and strengthen hair. It keeps all the moisture and proteins in and protects the hair in the outside with a moisturizing layer. This product is great for high porosity hairs as well.

In other words:

  • This is not for you if your hair gets protein overload with ease.
  • Or if your hair gets easily overloaded with moisture, this is NOT for you.
  • If you have fine or loose curls, this is NOT for you.

This product is ideal for coarse and high porosity hairs and for those who are looking forward to restoring and strengthen their hairs.

Besides having Shea Butter, which is a very heavy ingredient by itself, it also contains all kinds of oils (Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Adansonia Digitata Seed Oil, Castor Oil, and Mauritia Flaxuosa Fruit Oil). They also list an essential oil blend under fragrance. Since it has many oils, this product is very moisturizing and heavy. Probably too heavy for fine hair.

On the other side, we also have lots of protein here. Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein PG-Propyl Silanetirol, Yeast Extract, and Hydrolyzed Rice Protein are the proteins labeled in the product. Having Hydrolyzed protein in a product will ensure that the hair will receive all the protein it needs, and this will provide hair with strength and elasticity. However, this can also present a problem to hair with protein sensitivity, usually coarse hair.

Lastly, you will find lots of hydrating ingredients such as water, panthenol, glycerin, and aloe juice, which makes this product highly hydrating. Also, you can find fatty alcohols such as Stearyl and Cetyl Alcohols.

Personal Experience & Thoughts

Would I buy this product again? Is it worth the money? Would I recommend this product to others?

To all these questions I would yes.

When I used this product, I had hair damage on the top layer of my hair due to heat damage caused by showering with hot water for long periods. I can say that this product became instantly one of my favorites. After the first time using it, my hair felt very moisturized, and the strength was evident.

Something I look forward to in a Leave-In is that it leaves my hair feeling moisturized and hydrated. Those two things are a must for me, as I usually have very (difficult to moisturize) dry ends. And I can say that I found them in this product.

However, I would like to highlight that this product is heavy. Although I think it will work to repair hair, I can see fine hair weighting down with ease.
