Kennedi’s Essentials DC (Product Breakdown)

Product Name: Kennedi’s Essentials Moisturize & Restore Deep Conditioner (aka Kennedi’s Essentials DC).

Introduction

Among the many curly hair products that are in the world, I came across this female-owned company called Kennedi’s Essentials.

Today, we will take a detailed look at one of their products, the Kennedi’s Essentials Moisturize & Restore Deep Conditioner. I will also bring my experience with this product and take on an in-deep look at their ingredients and what I recommend based on them.

Product Overview

*The ingredients are described and further discussed in the Ingredients Review section bellow. Also, to know whether or not the product is CGM approved, I am using the webpage Is It CG? (isitcg.com)

The Kennedi’s Essentials DC is rich in hydrating ingredients. Having all of these humectants (hydrating ingredients) in a product means that they will bring lots of moisture into the hair shaft. With this said, this product could be too much for hair types that have moisture sensitivity (get moisture overload with ease). However, coarse and damaged hair types will benefit from this.

On the other hand, this product contains an adequate amount of protein, which means it is good to repair as the label says. Therefore, hair types with protein sensitivity might not have a problem with it.

In other words:

  • If your hair gets moisture overload with ease, this is NOT for you.
  • However, if your hair has difficulty absorbing water (coarse and damaged hair types), this IS for you.

Ingredients Review

*The ingredients mentioned above come from the list of ingredients labeled in the product I used. Also, I get a detailed description of the substances labeled mainly from cosmeticsinfo.org and truthinaging.com.

Humectants

In the humectants side, you can find Hydrolyzed Oat Protein, ProVitamin B5 (Panthenol), Aloe Powder, Sodium Lactate, Glyceryl Caprylate, and Glycerin. All these humectants mean lots of moisture going into your hair. Usually, coarse hair types need the most moisture as these hair types do a pretty good job retaining proteins, but not the best job soaking water. Along with coarse hair, we also have damaged or high porosity hair types. These hair types also need moisture as they tend to lose water with ease.

Proteins

Besides having Hydrolyzed Oat Protein in the humectant side, it is also in the proteins side. Hydrolyzed Proteins help to provide hair with both proteins and hydration. Despite having only one protein ingredient present in this product, we can find it near the top of the list. This means that this ingredient is in higher concentration. And this is good, as it will not be too much protein for protein sensitive hair types.

Emollients & Occlusives

When it comes to emollients, we can find Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Castor Oil, ProVitamin B5 (Panthenol), and Capryloyl Glycerin, Sebacic Acid Copolymer. We all know that emollients add shine and softness to the hair. They also smooth out the cuticle. Some of these ingredients also work as occlusives (used to seal the hair to lock moisture in).

Others

At the top of the list, we have Organic Banana (Musa Sapientum) Juice, which was an ingredient hard to find on the web. According to different sources, this ingredient has nourishing and moisturizing properties. However, since there is not much research about this ingredient, I couldn’t find what benefits it brings to the hair. I would greatly appreciate it if you have any knowledge backed up by science about this ingredient.

In the preservatives side, we have Sodium Lactate and Caprylhydroxamic Acid. Preservatives help to prolong the shelve life of a product. Most products have preservatives, and most preservatives are not damaging to the body.

Lastly, you will find fragrance, which, as usual, has undisclosed ingredients. I recommend you to do an allergy test before using the product, so you know whether or not this product could give you an allergic reaction.

Personal Experience & Thoughts

I got the Kennedi’s Essentials DC from a giveaway hosted by the gorgeous Instagram curly, @blessed_wit_kinkz. I never heard of this brand before, so I had no expectations.

On my first try, I felt that the consistency of the product was a bit watery for my liking. However, to my surprise, the product left my hair feeling hydrated, moisturized, and soft.

Although I did not do the DC with heat for further conditioning, I believe that 10 minutes were enough for me. My hair felt very well and was on point, and there were enough moisture and proteins. It was balanced!

As I said before, I do not believe this product will work for hair types that get easily moisturized (usually fine hair types). This product is highly moisturizing, and it could bring moisture overload to these hair types.
